Finding joy in everyday moments while broadening horizons

Driven by curiosity and a desire to make the most of every opportunity, Pui Chong is exploring new horizons at SMU while building a career in Finance. Grounded in a belief in finding joy in everyday moments and learning from every experience, he balances academic excellence with a rich and engaged university life.

Tell us more about your decision to specialise in Finance.

With a diploma in Mass Communication from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I entered SMU expecting to pursue a career in marketing. However, SMU’s broad-based curriculum opened my eyes to new possibilities and inspired me to explore my interests through human resources and strategy internships.

Initially, I found finance intimidating and doubted it was the right fit. But after completing a few finance modules – and doing surprisingly well in them – I realised finance isn’t just about crunching numbers. It’s also about problem-solving, strategic thinking, and impactful communication. I began to see how it aligned with my strengths and interests. Specialising in finance soon felt like a natural choice. The more I’ve explored it, the stronger my interest has become.

What inspired your decision to pursue your degree at SMU, and how has the SMU Access scholarship shaped your university journey?

Choosing SMU was a decision shaped by several factors – its central location, unparalleled professional networks, diverse overseas exchange opportunities, and the SMU Access scholarship which guarantees 100% tuition fee coverage.

The SMU Access scholarship has profoundly shaped my university journey by giving me something invaluable: time. Without the pressure of part-time work, I’ve been able to focus on my studies, immerse myself in CCAs and community service, and spend quality time with my loved ones. A highlight was my winter internship in Vietnam, where I made new friends, experienced an intercultural work environment, and created unforgettable memories.

To those from similar backgrounds, make the most of your university experience. Opportunities like the SMU Access scholarship free up time for personal and professional growth. University life is more than academics – it’s a chance to learn, explore, and grow in every sense.

Your involvement in multiple CCAs and consistent Dean’s List achievements are impressive. How do you maintain balance while excelling academically and participating in extracurriculars?

A key strategy I rely on is setting clear priorities – addressing urgent tasks while carving out time for long-term goals. Leaning on a strong support system has been invaluable - whether it is studying together, sharing resources, or simply encouraging one another – friendships keep me connected and engaged.

Self-awareness is equally important. Knowing my limits and when to recharge helps me avoid burnout.

Ultimately, balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about staying focused on what matters most in each moment and giving it your best.

Your love for seizing opportunities is evident in your diverse experiences. What motivates you to step out of your comfort zone, and what’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself through these experiences?

I see opportunities as open doors – always present. Even when one closes, others await. The key is staying mindful. Focus on the present and do not dwell on what’s already passed. I’m grateful for the ability to embrace new opportunities as they come.

The promise of new experiences motivates me to step out of my comfort zone. From city-hopping across Japan during a study exchange to mentoring children at my alma mater, Zhangde Primary School, these moments have surpassed my expectations and shaped me in ways I didn’t expect.

One other surprising thing I’ve discovered about myself is a deep appreciation for life’s simple moments – whether it’s enjoying a good cup of coffee or eating a meal with loved ones. I hope to continue to find joy in these everyday moments as I move forward.
